Press in Split Q&A with Glenn & Donny

Glenn Pendlay anf Donny Shankle sat down to adress some question they received on Donny's Press in Split Drills and Split Jerk Foot Position video.

Notes:

Q: How wide should the feet be in the split?
A: slightly wider than shoulder widths

Q: What about the back foot position?
A: back heel outward, don't rotate (knee can't drop)

Q: What about the weight distribution between the feet?
A: Glenn says 60/40, Zygmunt Smalcerz says 45/55, Donny says 50/50

Q: Can I do the presses behind the neck?
A:
  • not important , it's only a warm up exercise, no dramatic difference.
  • easer from behind the neck, when you don't have a great split to start with
  • never done before, might try from behind the neck first
Q: What about the back knee dropping?
A:
  • it's important that the front knee is not moving forward or back, whether you press or jerk from the split
  • exercises helps ou to keep the hips under the bar
  • front knee moving forward -> hips come forward -> bar comes forward-> can't support a heavy weight
  • most important aspect of that lift: no horizontal motion with the front knee, and only vertical motion at the hips
  • beginners keep pressing until they can keep their body in correct position for a whole set of 5, then move on to the jerk
Q: What are proper weights to use?
A:  for the press Donny is about 30 % of his heaviest Jerk
